Essential Resources for Texas Families

These two resources are among the most important tools we recommend for families navigating
autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and long-term support services in Texas.

Medicaid Waiver List

Texas Medicaid waivers can provide valuable long-term services and supports for individuals with disabilities, but waiting lists in Texas can be many years long. Even if you do not currently need services, we strongly encourage families to add their child to any applicable waiver interest lists as early as possible. If services are no longer needed when your child reaches the top of the list, you can always decline them.

The Spectrum.Org

The site includes vital conversations among parents, autism service providers, BCBAs, and other autism experts who can help parents navigate some of the earliest decisions of an autism diagnosis. Discover more exclusive features and content at their website. The Spectrum.org is an educational initiative brought to you by CASP.

We’ll be happy to help you create the best museum experience for you or your family!
  • Alley Theatre: Both theatres have wheelchair- and scooter-accessible seating.  Accessible seating is available online, by phone, or in person. To help us better serve your seating needs, we recommend that you purchase your tickets as much in advance as possible.
  • Children’s Museum Houston: Prepare for an extraordinary adventure as children with ASD, sensory processing disorder, and a variety of learning differences, along with their families, are granted exclusive access to the Museum! Registration is required for this event.
  • Houston Zoo: At the Houston Zoo, we believe that everyone deserves to feel welcome, included and supported. We strive to create an environment where people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can safely explore and connect with wildlife. As part of our commitment to being a Zoo for All, the Houston Zoo is proud to be designated as a Certified Autism Center by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This certification means that all staff and volunteers have completed autism-specific training, and the Zoo has undergone an on-site review from IBCCES professionals.
  • Performing Arts Houston: Live performance is for everyone. We offer a variety of accommodations at all venues to ensure every guest can enjoy the show.
  • 1960 Playhouse: At Playhouse 1960, we believe theatre is for everyone. Our goal is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where all members of our community can experience the magic of live performance.
  • Moody Gardens: When you visit Moody Gardens, you will find the entire property is designed to accommodate people with disabilities. There are more than 70 accessible parking spaces and curb ramps. All buildings have ramps that lead to entrances, and all of the restroom facilities are handicap accessible.
  • Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo: A Sensory Friendly Experience is held in select areas of the carnival, presented by First Community, to promote an accommodating and positive experience for all Rodeo guests with sensory sensitivities or challenges. During this time, there will be minimal lights and sounds permitted in the carnival.

Announcing our transition of young adult direct services to Project Beacon

For over two decades, Inspire ND, has focused on training individuals with autism to be included in the community. We are now focusing on empowering the community, providing them training and tools to include our individuals. With autism affecting 1 in 31 children and 1 in 4 are neurodiverse, we have a powerful opportunity to create a greater impact by equipping the community to better support these community members.

In 2023, we began exploring a partnership with Project Beacon, another nonprofit who is serving people on the autism spectrum. Project Beacon had the goal of providing day programming services and then residential services tailored for individuals on the autism spectrum. We are thrilled to say that we moved forward with this partnership!

As of January 1, 2025, Inspire ND’s young adult direct services transitioned under the Project Beacon umbrella. We chose Project Beacon as a partner because they truly want to deliver high quality young adult services for those on the autism spectrum and continue the incredible work we started. Project Beacon’s mission and vision were created by parents of children on the spectrum who truly want an enriched life for their child today and in the future.
